Hi, my name is Anissa Claiborne , pronounced "uh-nee-suh" and I am a Junior Broadcast Journalism major. I was born and raised in Riverside, California and I am 20 years old. I am African American, Mexican and Salvadorian. My favorite color is red, and my favorite animal is a giraffe.
I am involved in Black Student Association (BSA), National Association of Black Journalist (NABJ) and I am also a Spirit Leader. So, if you ever see me cheering at games, come say hi!
When I am not at school or visitng family back home, I am working out, hanging out with my boyfriend or friends, binge watching shows on Netflix, or shopping to find new clothes to change my style.
Since high school, I have known what I wanted to major in and what I wanted my career to be. After co hosting shows on the schools TV station and hosting the male pageant show, I realized that broadcast journalism was something I liked and could see myself doing for a long time. Before attending USC, I was a student at Arizona State University for 1 year. While I was there, I studied Broadcast Journalism at their Walter Cronkite School of Mass Communications and Journalism. I decided to transfer to USC because I missed home, and the opportunities USC has to offer are like no other school in the nation. I also always wanted to live in LA, so it was the perfect opportunity.
When I am asked why I chose to study journalism, I can easily say that hearing unique stories, reporting, and having constant change seems like the perfect job for me. Journalist are one of the few people who can constantly inform the public on anything they want; whether that is about daily news, styles, or even food. I have never been a person who can sit at a desk for hours, and I am not too fond of math or science, so things like reporting on events, doing man on the street interviews, or even doing research on things that are often over looked really interest me. My favorite part of journalism are the interviews. If you are prepared, you can find out such great things about a person or the topic you are writing about. As journalism evolves, it is amazing to see the same story get told in various ways. Whether its on the radio, TV, print, or interactive website, journalists can reach large amounts of people in short amounts of time. I hope to one day be on TV for a network like BET or E! News covering award shows, pageants, daily news or even fashion.
By being in this class, I hope to learn a new form of journalism other than just print or TV. Learning to code is a new but exciting challenge for me especially since I am not that great with technology. I look forward to building new friendships with you all and having a great semester with professor Bui! :)
